The quantity of cryptocurrencies misplaced to hackers and phishing assaults considerably elevated in August whereas the market wandered in uncertainty.

In keeping with an X publish by blockchain safety agency PeckShield, the crypto ecosystem misplaced $313.86 million in over 10 completely different hacks final month. Of this tally, over $293 million was misplaced to phishing assaults.

This reveals an 18% enhance in crypto belongings misplaced to fraudulent actors since July. Per a crypto.information report, crypto and decentralized finance firms misplaced $266 million to hackers with a complete of 16 occasions.

Hackers searching whales

The most important hack belongs to a whale that misplaced 4,064 Bitcoin (BTC), price roughly $238 million, to a phishing assault on Aug. 19. The attacker quickly moved the funds to varied crypto platforms together with THORChain, KuCoin and Railgun.

Fairly equally, one other whale misplaced over $55 million in Dai (DAI) stablecoin to a phishing assault. Knowledge reveals that the funds have been saved within the fourth-largest DeFi protocol Maker.
